Saturday

Arrived in Nagasaki after two hour flight, on which I slept the whole, way.  Nagasaki is so different from Tokyo.  Very green, small buildings and quite hilly, approaching a town like Kelowna. Temperature is mild, very misty. A large Christian element here.  We went to a store for tea and Castella cakes, and many of us bought these cakes for our host families.  Loved the green here.  It is furthest south and west of the archipelago. Homes have tile roofs and are the typical curved style, going up at the ends. Like pagodas.  Our guide is an elderly gentleman who has a cute sense of humour, rather delightful.
Many tunnels throughout the city.  Infrastructure must have been incredible.  They get typhoons here at the same time of year as caribbean has their hurricanes.
Many cherry trees and the Japanese seem to make an opportunity to sit under them with a picnic lunch, when weather is suitable.  They take their shoes off to sit on the tarp under the tree. Our hotel is very grand indeed with a large room and two queen beds.  We had a wonderful Chinese dinner tonight with unlimited beer and wine, saki, and hard liquor...of which I only had beer.  Meal had about 8 courses..shrimp, pork, smoked goose, noodles, soup, dessert. I don't remember them all.
I have reassessed the topography...it resembles Capri, not Kelowna. Toilet seat again splendid and warm with bidet and shower capability. Tomorrow a tour of the city and possibly spa!  Naked spa, I mean.
